Unconditional love

I am a super-big-fan of a Radio Show called "This American Life"...

It has touching stories--some that make you laugh, others make you cry...

I highly suggest taking a few minutes to listen when you can...it's free if you stream via your computer.

http://www.thislife.org/

This specific episode under (06)--Unconditional Love aired
9/15 Episode 317
The show highlights Stories of unconditional love between parents and children, and how hard love can be sometimes in daily practice.

It begs the question: Is unconditional love a social construction? Is it something we learn or is it a part of our nature?

What's in a wink?

wink , clin d'oeil

Ok, so what's in a wink? In the past week or so, winks have been either happening to me or around me. It's made me ponder, what's in a wink?
And, even more---what does it mean if the starbucks guy winks at me (for those that know who I mean, the cute Latin-American guy with curly hair..ummmm very cute!)
Or, this Persian guy who flooded my office with smiles yesterday....
Or, a girlfriend who smiles and winks from across campus?

In this post-modern world, a wink has many meanings. I suppose it's based upon the giver/reciever.

Here's one of my favorite site-wikipedia's answer to the "wink:".....

The wink is an intentional facial expression made by closing one eye; it is distinguished from the blink by the fact that the other eye remains open. A wink is a form of semi-formal communication, which indicates shared, unspoken knowledge.

A wink can silently indicate a shared secret, such as if a salesperson gives a customer a brochure and says "here you go, it's free". Infrequently, it may also mean "got it" or "yes, I understand".

In Western cultures, women may wink to men they are interested in dating, but this has grown out of fashion though it is still used occasionally. Winking is also done by men to women, as a form of charm.

In Latin American cultures, winking is also a romantic or sexual invitation. In Nigeria, winking is a signal for children to leave the room. [1] Many Chinese consider winking to be rude. [2].

We are Peace, We make Peace

His Holiness the Dalai Lama graced UB's Campus this week. I was lucky enough to see him up-close in a closed session with just Chinese students.
He is truly a beautiful soul. He is
love, humility and grace. What also makes him so special is the way he uses HUMOR as a way to bridge differences. During his talk with the Chinese students, he commended their 5 century history to pay respect for their culture, and chuckled and said; And Chinese food is just fantastic! All of us laughed in agreement.

Here is just one picture I captured during this event. I was touched by his visit... I am thankful that my job allowed me to be close to the events.

The BIG move to "little summer"

Little Summer is now HOME. This past weekend we moved our lives from Whitney to our new 'hood'....and it's so cute (as you can tell from the picture).
Today I congratulate Mike: for buying a very cute little house and keeping his Auntie Di along for the ride.

Additionally, there are MANY very good friends to thank. Without their help Saturday and/or Sunday we would never have made it...
Thanks to my brother Mike, to Jay and Joe....Kris, Rita and Ali, Angela and Dawn...Umesh and Ashish....Karl...and Cippie...they all carried sofas, beds, TVs, and many boxes...etc....they hold a very special place in my heart. Thank you!

Also, thanks to of course George, Elsa and Sofia for making us all a BEAUTIFUL brunch which made my tummy happy.

Stay tuned for the first Little Summer dinner party!

Six Months ago today

Spirit

Because my Mom just had surgery, I am reminded of how precious our lives our—and how happy I am that she is here in my life. She keeps us laughing through it all, she’s strong, loving and kind….
So, today I am reflecting a bit about what I was doing six months ago today....
Saying Good-bye to my Dad.

I miss him…..but I don’t miss seeing him sick. So for that, I am happy that his soul is freed from his body that was broken.
When I miss him, I think about all that he loved and that brings me closer to him more than things he owned or even his burial site.
I think about his love of plants, and I see my plants or the plants @ my Mom’s house and I can almost feel him smile.
Birds remind me of my Dad. He so loved birds….now, I think he’s able to fly around heaven just like them.

This is the quote from my advisor: "Congratulations to Sherene, Diane, Mary and Tomoka. They are very good reviews! And book reviews are legitimate scholarly work for your CV."

Coming from her....it's a REAL compliment.

On to the next phase....publishing in a top journal~~~

New York Reunions....

This weekend was marked with fantastic tennis moments...and fond friendship reunions. It's funny that going to such a dynamic city like NY....always makes people compare ....where they are 'from' to this cosmopolitan place that is like no other. As I reflected upon that notion, I realized that it doesn't really matter where my cool friends (Dirk/Ish and Vivan) go....it's all about the time we spend together....What a better way to do that than some good-food/drinks and some "hubbly bubbly"....
