Highlights of Vacation...

Last week I jetsetted from NYC to Tampa....and I had a great time. Thanks to Rima and Suketu---we enjoy great food and good times...

Florida was HOT and really fun. It was the first family vacation we have taken in a very long time.....the whole gang was in Tampa to celebrate Laura and Sam's wedding on 7-7-07. I am so happy for her and her new husband and I wish them the best...
From Aidan's smile, you can see he does as well!

Mike and I got stay at my brother's Condo on Clearwater Beach's Sand Key.....I asked Mike to capture the sunset...all he could think about was the blisters on his feet...

This Condo has everything I love....water, sun and a TENNIS COURT!

All in all..it was a wonderful week away from Buffalo....but I was so glad to rest in my bed sunday night....
Now I need another vacation. :)

NYC is such a dynamic place...I think I will gain lots of energy there....and then off to Florida for my Niece's wedding. I can't believe she's getting married~ It's so exciting for her. I can't wait to lay on the beach....

Stay tuned for great pics and exciting stories.....

Cheers~

What do you protest ?

Tiana Square, originally uploaded by maasha.

I recently saw this fantastic documentary about the Tienanmen Square protests of 1989... PBS's Frontline produced a film by Antony Thomas--where he went to China in search of "The Tank Man." The documentary went in depth asking questions like---Who was he? What was his fate? (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tankman/view/)

I really find it interesting to think about this guy. What is also interesting is that many young Chinese do not have ANY idea this protest even happened. Was his bravery for naught? Or, did this prompt the Chinese government to change it's policies and in essence become the emerging superpower it is today?

I guess this made me question, what do I believe in so much that I would stand in front of tank and risk my life?

What would you do?

BBQ good-bye party

Well, this is the 'end of an era' as Amresh calls it....
Rita is leaving on Wednesday and I am very sad. I know I am not the only one who is close to her that is sad she is going home.....but at the same time, I know that for both her and all the others that will leave soon, it's a fresh, exciting start for them.

I am sad to see her leave because of the large impact she and all these other beautiful people have had on my life.

NOW, I am ready for the next, new, fresh beginning for my life as well. I am ready for new job experiences. I am done hosting the large, crazy parties....and I am ready to start something new. To connect with small groups of people....and also with that one special connection....

I thank the universe in advance for providing me with this new bright start~
And I thank the universe for these wonderful people....

Happy Birthday Angela~

Today is my friend Angela's birthday. Angela is good at almost everything she takes on....including being a very caring, thoughtful and loving friend. She is there for me when I need a shoulder to cry on...and also a friend to laugh with.
I am thankful that I met Ang, and that she became a part of the "gang"....she has enriched all of our lives and I cherish our friendship. Thank you universe for ensuring Ang came to Buffalo....we will miss her as she starts on her career journey. But she will always be in my "gang".

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

NYC fun

Last night I returned from a fun-filled weekend in NYC. I really went for the people....I mean New York can be fun, an adrenalin adventure.....food for your eyes (and tummy) but most of all, the diversity is what I crave.
I miss Ish, Dirk, and others that have moved into this high paced, overworked world...but I know they are following their dreams....and for that, I am happy for them...and happy I can visit chaos.

Graduation time

It's that time......where people are finishing their academic lives as students and starting their new lives as scholars and contributors to the larger global community.
Congrats to so many, Rita, Ali, Amresh, Ang, the list goes on and on.....
And...many will also leave Buffalo soon....I am a bit sad, but always happy because these beautiful people have made my life better. They have allowed me to experience times, places and thoughts I never would have had if they didn't enter my life.
I am so glad the universe brings me these wonderful people.

As they start on their next journey, I am sure they will continue to bless others lives as they have blessed mine---I just hope others have the smarts to appreciate them~

Bush's blunders~

My friend Sofia sent this to me today, and I think it's funny! We have such a !#2!9# president~

Quoting today's Washington Post:

"President Bush welcomed the queen with a royal faux pas about her age, suggesting she had witnessed American independence in 1776. Expressing admiration for her long friendship with the United States, Bush noted that Elizabeth had dined with 10 presidents and had "helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 . . ." He quickly caught and corrected his mistake, "in 1976."

Her Majesty did not appear to be amused.

Laughter rippled across the South Lawn, but the queen, who celebrated her 81st birthday last month, shot Bush a look that he sheepishly acknowledged "only a mother could give a child."
It wasn't his only comeuppance of the day."

What is Aidan trying to tell us?

Last night Aidy was so cute~ He loves to play with Auntie Di...and in between he tried hard to make a very serious statement..."Aeyya ya" Or something like that...
What does it mean? Only Aidy knows.

I so love him...I thank the universe and Aidy's Mommy and Daddy for creating such a wonderful nephew for me to love~~

So tonight Mike and I had our first Dance class with Chucky Chazz (that's his real name)....and yes, it's true, he does have a pink house. But he was a blast....a fantastic teacher!

I realized that I so love to dance...and I have to keep doing this as a steady part of my life. I feel so good moving to the beat and in tandem with a partner......
Now, i just have to learn how to let Mike lead ~

Spring Reciepes...

1
01 Cookbooks is a blog I check once a week-- it was started by Heidi Swanson who is a San Francisco based photographer, cookbook author, designer - and creator of 101 Cookbooks. Her writing and photographs have been featured in The Washington Post, Vegetarian Times, Whole Foods Markets, and on NPR~

I really love it because her recipes are spicy, worldly and full of life....and...attached to the recipe---she talks about her travel stories and experiences making you even more excited to cook!

I am going to try this one out, a reciept for Dukkah, a spicy combo you use to add to olive oil and Bread
...it's so easy and will surely be a hit with great Wegmans bread...Maybe I will bring it in tomorrow @ ISSS....
At least my officemates will be happy for sure~

Happy Eating~

Could this enhance my front lawn?

100_0040, originally uploaded by Chris Earing.

Spring has sprung in Buffalo....and Mike and I are trying to figure out how to enhance our front yard for Buffalo's Annual Garden walk.
We live @ Garden Walk CENTRAL...so the pressure is ON~

Of course the suggestion was add something like this cute little Knome...Ummm, what do you think?

Mike was suggesting that maybe we hire someone to dress up like one~

"Children of Men"...makes you think...

So Mike and I watched this the other night...and, I have to say I didn't like it when I started watching it...
then, upon reflection, I realized the poignant messages ..We as a human race are fragile yet strong...we have the power to create, and destroy....This movie
directed by Alfonso Cuarón (one of the up-in-coming Mexican directors)--is something you should see...and decide for yourself if it's poignant, smart and telling...

Regardless---Clive Owen is nice eye-candy~

Chance meetings

Friday I was totally shocked to meet up with an old high school Friend...Kush...
A cool guy in high school, a star "beat-boxer" and pleasurable classmate....we shared a common friend...who I come to find out married a Romanian guy!

Now Kush is a Phd Candidate in American studies, dazzling undergrads @ UB and helping to push the students of tomorrow to deconstruct power...it's really cool that he's a part of this counter-hegemonic movement...

But, the wackiest thing was his take on me...He said that I look even better than I did in high school.....and I can't decided if I should take that as something positive or negative...like that means I look bad in HS? Regardless, he was full of compliments and that of course makes one feel great about themselves...but either way...we both realized that we are at that critical stage...getting older...
I guess when you run into someone you knew when you were 14...and now you are both in your thirties...you start to see your own age in a new way...

Spring...I am feeling it..

Neon Flower bud, originally uploaded by TonivS.

Well, today isn't very nice outside...but in the last 2 days...I felt like this flower....
I am feeling a bit less frustrated with school...and I am almost having a breakthrough with my research..

I am thankful to my friends in the department...such smart people...and for having such a great advisor. I realize how important this woman has been in shaping my academic career thus far. I guess when we are confronted with having to defend someone ...we open our eyes to the amazingly talented people around us...

Hopefully the snow in Buffalo will stop and I can grow too like this flower~

whirlwind of thought

whirlwind of thought, originally uploaded by shakycam.

I feel like this girl....thoughts of work, life in general seem to invade my head, just as I am attempting to sit and start to do some hardcore academic work.
I have only a few hours to be productive today and I keep thinking about....
am I good teacher?
am I good at this whole academic thing?
What do I really want?
Why I am doing so much SHIT for GSA
Why are all my friends leaving?

I guess spring is making me feel like new things should be happening. As I see the grass trying to grow outside my house...I feel like somehow I am also trying to grow...
But I still feel confused....
Where should I grow?

Judge Joe Pigott served nearly two decades on the bench in Jackson, Miss. But he says no defendant confounded him more than the man nicknamed "Pip" — otherwise known as the late Willie Earl Dow, whose exploits often landed him in Pigott's courtroom.

Recalling those days with his wife, Lorraine, Pigott said that Dow had two bad habits: drinking, and stealing in order to support his drinking.

"You didn't have to try him, he always pled guilty," Pigott said. "And he was a likable person."

Dow also sent the judge an occasional letter. In one, he wrote from prison to tell Pigott, "I feel like I've been up here long enough this time, and I would appreciate it if you'd write the parole board and see if they'll let me out."

Pigott did so — and Dow was released.

But six weeks later, Dow robbed one of his friends, taking a watch and the keys to his car. The friend called the sheriff, and soon Dow was back before Judge Pigott, pleading guilty yet again.

"I am so disappointed I don't know what to say," the judge said. "I just don't understand you," he told Dow as he prepared to announce his sentence.

"Well, judge," Dow answered, "I'm disappointed in you."

"Everything in the courtroom got deathly quiet," Pigott recalls.

"When I was here four years ago," Dow went on, "you were sitting in that same chair, wearing that same robe, making that same speech."

"I figured a man of your caliber ought to at least be on the Supreme Court by now."

"I told him, 'Mr. Dow, I was going to sentence you to five years,'" Pigott recalls. "'But since you are so perceptive, I think I'll just give you three years,' which I did."

The next time Pigott saw Dow was at the time of his retirement, when a ceremony was held at the courtroom. And in strode Willie Earl "Pip" Dow.

"Mr. Dow," Pigott said then, "I am so glad to see you."

"Well," Pigott remembers him answering, "I heard they were going to hang Judge Pigott at the courtroom, and so, I didn't want to miss that."

Pigott then asked Dow how long it would be before he was back in trouble.

"He said, 'Judge, you're resigning; I'm resigning. I'm going to retire just like you.'"

That led Pigott to ask the new judge and the county sheriff to keep him informed about Dow, and to let him know if "Pip" was arrested for anything. And Dow kept his promise in the remaining decade or so of his life.

"Sometimes you make friends in strange ways," Pigott says.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!~

Today is my Mom's birthday...
While everyone is usually very biased and says things like "I have the best Mom in the world" for Jen, Mike, Dave and I, it's TOTALLY true. She has always put us before any of her needs, she spent countless hours helping us with spelling, writing, or just playing Barbies with us. And now...she continues to help Jen and I...and is a constant beacon of hope, love positive feelings...

International Womens Day

International Womens Day, originally uploaded by JIGGS.

Happy International Women’s Day!

It's funny that it isn't a holiday that is really celebrated here in the U.S-according to the official website for International Women's Day, it is now an official holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
In these countries, the article below says "the holiday “sees men honoring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues and with flowers and small gifts.”

What the heck happened here! AHHHHH
